On November 19th, an election for delegates to a Constituent Assembly, charged with writing a constitution, was held in Nepal. By all accounts it was considered a “success”!! In spite of pre-election political turmoil and some attempts to hinder the election, it was held as planned. Official reports of a 65%-70% voter turnout exceeded everyone’s expectations. Apart from a few isolated incidents, it was peaceful. Along with representatives of EU countries, Jimmy Carter and other Carter Center personnel were in Nepal to monitor the election process. This election brings hope to a country which has been without an constitution for ┬áseven years. Late breaking news indicates that a Maoist party is claiming voter fraud and threatening not to participate in the constituent assembly.
